Emotional / Passionate: Fuck with his crew, his family, he will hunt you down. But Jim won't kill you, because he believes in truth and justice. He'll bring prisoners in over murdering them. He drinks to the dead. He insists on sending a dead soldier (and former detainer), Lopez, home to his family ("He died for us.")

Idealist:

Tries to see the truth of people - even when others want only to attack, he tries to reason with the other party.

Can be obsessive with his dark side, as well as aggressive if he thinks he's doing the right thing. Once chased down a protomolecule creature far longer than he should have, pushing the crew beyond their limits. He was seeking revenge. Amos says something along the lines of him making some pretty stupid choices, but that he's always trying to do the right thing.

James Holden has an unusual backstory: he's the only son of a genetic collective of eight parents, who wanted him to stay and fight for his family's land. But Holden escaped that hopeless crusade by joining the UN Navy and serving on a starship, the UNN Zheng Fei. He was dishonorably discharged after clashing with his commanding officer, and Holden ended up as the acting executive officer on an ice hauler called The Canterbury, before he and the ship's survivors took over The Rocinante, neé The Tachi. Holden doesn't want to be anyone's hero, but the circumstances of his life have left him with no choice.
